I analysed two magazines and found a number of differences and similarities. One of the magazines was called “GQ” and the other was called “Q”. Q is a music magazine and the other GQ is a general gossip magazine about celebrities.

GQ

GQ (formerly Gentlemen's Quarterly) is an international monthly men's magazine based in New York City. The publication focuses on fashion, style, and culture for men, though articles on food, movies, fitness, sex, music, travel, sports, technology, and books are also featured. Gentlemen's Quarterly was launched in 1931 in the United States as Apparel Arts. It was a men's fashion magazine for the clothing trade, aimed primarily at wholesale buyers and retail sellers. Apparel Arts continued until 1957, when it was transformed into a quarterly magazine for men, which was published for many years by Esquire Inc. Apparel was dropped from the logo in 1958 with the spring issue after nine issues, and the name Gentlemen's Quarterly was established. Gentleman's Quarterly was re-branded as GQ in 1967. The rate of publication was increased from quarterly to monthly in 1970. Subsequently, international editions were launched as regional adaptations of the U.S. editorial formula. The magazine was made under a different name in 1931 and is still going strong and has a place among the top magazines due to the talent publishers and editors they have working for them.

Q

Q magazine is an alternative music magazine. The magazine was first published in 1986 and was different from other magazines due to it's high quality photography and printing, as well as having an older target audience. It's publishing company is Bauer Consumer Media (Emap) and is published monthly in the UK. Mark Ellen and David Hepworth founded the magazine because they felt it was a niche market as there wasn't a magazine for the older generation who were still buying CD's. It was originally going to be called 'Cue', however it was changed to 'Q' due to possible confusion with it being a snooker magazine, plus a single lettered title is thought to be more prominent on newsstands. Q launched a radio station in June 2008, however it is only available on digital TV. It also has its own music channel called Q TV and they hold the Q awards once a year. It's circulation figures are 103,017. (81,240 being in the UK and republic of Ireland) 01-Jul-2008 to 31-Dec-2008 and the magazine has a cover price of £3.90.
